Many are the answers that a father must give.  Some are difficult.  Some will challenge us to find "acceptable words" that will not only instruct, but will convict the conscience as well.  I was recently blessed to hear a father give a heartrending answer to a well beloved son who asked his dad the following question: "Dad, what is so wrong with tattoos and body piercing."  Here was his reply.

"Son, you know that I love you.  You are special gift from God.  You are made in the image of God(Genesis 1:27).  There never has been, nor will there ever be another person just like you.  You are a very handsome boy.  There will never be another person that looks just like you.  Your soul is unique.  This gives you a unique personality that is different and diverse from any person who will ever live.  God has given you have a good mind.  Millions of people do not have that.  You have a healthy body, you are able to enjoy many activities.  Many people do not have a body like that.  Millions of people are born without arms or legs.  When you stop and think about it, God has blessed you far above millions of other people.  Not only that, the Bible says that your body is a temple of the Holy Ghost(1Cor 6:19).  That means that God's Spirit abides within you.  It also says that your body is not your own.  It was bought with a price, the blood of Jesus.  He has asked you to not only honor Him with your spirit, but also with your body(v20). God is very interested with what you do with that temple. Now, satan knows all of this.  He sees all of the special blessings that your Lord has showered down upon you that you may use to represent Him.  He sees the loving and kind favor that has been extended to you from a loving Father.  Satan also knows that one of the best ways that he can get you to spit in God's face for all of this kindness is to encourage you to defile the very temple that He dwells.  How would you feel if you woke up tomorrow morning and someone had taken a can of spray paint and marked up your house or hammered a few spikes in it?  God loves you and has highly favored you.  For all of His kindness and favors, He asks you to honor His temple."

The father did not represent every person who had a tattoo or their body pierced to be an evil person, nor would we today.  Yet, the instruction was biblical.  It made me think of the Baal worshipers in the old testament and how they affected God's people with the same fads.  Truly, there is nothing new under the sun.  The instigators of these evils are well aware that the root of their activities are from dark days when God would warn His people, "Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the Lord."  The Lord would not have His people identify themselves with the Caananites.  Their marks and cuttings identified the god that they served.  Surely, many have followed the fad in ignorance.  Today, we identify the source for those who would honor God in spite of popularity.  I witnessed the effect that this loving message had upon the child.  The boy was evidently a born again believer who wanted to honor God.

Come and worship with us at Harmony Primitive Baptist Church.  Singing begins at 10:30 each Sunday morning followed by preaching at 11:00. By His mercy and grace, Neil Phelan, Jr.,  Pastor.
