“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”- Ephesians 6:17

A most valuable piece of the Christian armor we have before us today: the sword of the spirit.  Paul does not leave us to guess what this metaphor stands for in our Christian battle.  It is the word of God, the Holy Scriptures.

Can you imagine a soldier going out to battle without their sword? I have heard of deer hunters going off to hunt without their gun and arriving at the woods only to become spectators to the sport. To be without a sword in the midst of a battle is a more serious matter.  Yet, there are millions today who are ignorant of God’s word. They are ignorant of its precepts, its principles and fall headlong into Satan’s traps.  They have a Bible, but alas, they never read it.  The sword hangs useless in the scabbard.  The sword of the spirit is the only offensive weapon in the Christian’s arsenal.  It is by this weapon that we may advance in our battle and cut the giant’s head off.

When past and present sins haunt us and Satan says, “You are not a Christian, you may as well give up and go on with the world, you cannot overcome your sin, you are a hypocrite and God will not forgive you again”,
we must draw out I John 1:19 which says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Keep begging!  When our temptations seem unnatural, that our problems are unsolvable, our difficulties are innumerable and our hearts are incurable, we must draw out 1 Corinthians 10:13 to cut off this giant’s head which promises, “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”  Keep persevering in the faith!  When it seems that we are asking too much, that the mountain we want to move is too enormous, that our walls of Jericho are too high, that He couldn’t…. or He wouldn’t, we must draw out the sharp edge of Ephesians 3:20, “Now unto him that is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.”  Don’t stop believing!  When we think of death, of that time we must cross over the chilly waters of Jordan, that we may be alone and scared, that we may wind up on some smelly, cold, nursing home somewhere, and some nurse is waking us up to poke a pill down our throat to put us out of our senses for just a few more hours, we must draw from Isaiah 43:2, “When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.”  He is always with us!  This sword is sharper than a surgeon’s scalpel and by it the cancers of sin are cut out of our members.  By a healthy knowledge of scripture, our eyes are opened to what sin really is and we find repentance as we are turned from darkness to light, from the power of Satan unto God!
