“THE LOVE OF CHRIST”
“to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God.”
There is the story of a young girl who began a lengthy novel only to put it back on her shelf because it seemed boring. One night, she went on a blind date and met the most fascinating man she had ever known. She fell in love with him immediately. The night just flew by and when she returned to her home all she could think about was him! His name seemed familiar though, and the next day she picked up that boring novel to discover that he was the author. You can surely believe that the once boring novel took on an entirely different meaning to her now. She couldn’t put it down because she wanted to get in to the mind of its author. That’s the way the Bible is. To those who do not know its author, it is the most boring book in the world. But to those who have met its author and fallen in love with Him it is the most interesting, most exciting, most comforting book in the whole world. One reason is because it tells them about His love for them, for His people. In one sense, the Bible is a love letter to His people, telling them that they belong to Him, that He has sent His Son to redeem them from their sins, that His love is everlasting, that nothing can separate them from His love, and that He loved them before this world was spoken into existence. In our verse before you today we are encouraged to do something: “to know the love of Christ.” Do you know the love of Jesus? Getting to know the Savior is the most wonderful thing on earth. The more we know about HIM, the more we love Him. I am sure there is enough to learn about our Lord to enjoy in this life and the everlasting life to come. There are at least three ways that we may know and begin to comprehend the love of Christ. One is by reading the love letter. The second is by going to a church that preaches about Him and His love. The third is by talking to Him in prayer. Father, give us grace to know your Son and our redeemer better and to know the love Christ with passeth knowledge. Help us to fall in love with Him daily!
